Procedure for registering a child

Children born after April 17, 1985 are eligible if:

  • both parents are registered, or
  • one parent is registered under Section 6(1) of the Indian Act

The following 2 documents are required:

  • A photocopy of the child’s long birth certificate also known as the statement of live birth (this document states the parent/parent’s names)
  • A completed and signed application for Registration of a Minor Child under the Indian Act form

The application form to obtain the statement of live birth is available at the administration office and a $35.00 fee must accompany the application.

This form is sent to the Thunder Bay Office. When the long birth document is received this is sent to Indian Affairs along with signed application to register a minor child.
