Literacy Resource (New Program)
Lakeview School has moved up to the next level in providing a Balanced Literacy program for each child. We have added the position of Literacy Resource Teacher (LRT) to further enhance the delivery of reading and writing skills and strategies. In line with the belief that early intervention is the key to laying the foundation of literacy, the LRT role follows a supportive and collaborative model, working alongside the classroom teachers and developing literacy strategies in the classroom. In a nutshell, it is sort of like team teaching.
There are many components to the LRT role, with the main focus being to help each child improve their reading and writing skills. Learning should be a joyful experience, with reading becoming a powerful lifelong skill, necessary in today’s world. In addition to programming for students, Lakeview School hopes to offer some parent literacy workshops to assist parents with the development of good literacy skills for their children.
Special Education
Lakeview School is committed to ensure that every exceptional student is provided with the most inclusive environment possible, enabling them to fulfill their potential. Many exceptional students can be served in an inclusive program but an alternative setting may be necessary when their needs are such that they cannot be met in an integrated setting.
Lakeview School has two excellent programs to meet the needs of various individuals. The Learning Resource Program runs in the mornings to provide much needed early literacy, numeracy and life skills to a small group of children. In the afternoons, these students are part of their regular peer group.
The Fresh Start Program runs all day to provide support and programming to another small group of children. The Fresh Start students are integrated into the regular classrooms in various subjects as soon as they are ready.
Individual Education Program (IEP)
It is...
- a written plan that describes specific programming for a student.
- a record of accommodations needed to help the student achieve their learning expectations based on the student’s strengths and needs.
- a working document that identified learning expectations that have been modified from expectations as outlined by the Ministry of Education.
- a working document that outlines alternative expectations, when appropriate for the student.
- a record of specific knowledge and skills to be assessed and evaluated on/with regular school report cards.
