Kid's Health

The nursing staff is doing annual screening of heights and weights of all the school population to assist in measuring success of prevention activities. Some of this data will be analyzed with assistance from the Northern School of Medicine and the nursing program.

The Diabetes program utilized some of the upstream strategy funding to assist in the training costs for one of our HBHC workers to be trained as a Diabetes Educator with the program through Health Canada in Six Nations in 2007. This staff member was included in the curriculum planning for all of the grades at Lakeview School during the year to enhance their knowledge of ways to prevent diabetes through use of the Kahn Awake Model and activity promoted physical activities during the recess periods.

All of our nursing staff is available as resources for the teachers to provide enhanced health teaching to the students at the teacher’s request. The Diabetes Educator worked closely with Lakeview School for the balanced school day and some workshops for parents, teachers and information sessions held for community members including a workshop with stations for all of the children to practice a balanced school lunch for the two lunch periods with healthy food choices for all the children at Lakeview School. This workshop was a big hit with the students and the teachers.

This year sessions were held on various topics such as growth and development for grade 7 & 8 and sexual health for grade 8s, healthy touching and safety workshops for the younger grades by the Community Health Nurses at the Health Centre. The grade 8s also were provided with sessions for “Colour it Up” by our nursing staff. The teachers were provided with refresher classes on epi pen use at Lakeview with 6 students identified with severe allergies in the school.

The health centre staff also provides volunteers for supervision at school events when possible. The diabetes program successfully promoted the Lakeview School participation in the World Record Walk on October 3, 2007 with 201 participants walking that day.
