The Homemakers Program is funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. The purpose of the Homemakers Program is to assist the frail elderly and disabled who wish to remain in their home with ongoing or short term home support services during periods of incapacitation or convalescence (gradual recovery of health and strength after illness). Homemakers provide services to people in need to help them remain in the comfort of their own homes. Towards this aim Homemakers provide services in private households. They perform routine household cleaning such as sweeping, washing floors, dishes and laundry and meal preparation. Homemakers can also care for children in their homes when the primary caregiver faces unexpected short term illness or hospitalization. Homemakers do not administer medication of any kind.

In 2007/2008 the Homemakers Program serviced an average of 10-15 clients per month. The majority of clients serviced are the elderly and disabled of our community. The remaining clients serviced included sole support parents who required short-term child care. Homemakers may visit the same household for months or even years while many work with different clients. If you wish to access homemaking services please contact Colleen Debassige who will complete the application with you. A “Needs Assessment” based on your monthly income will also be completed to determine whether or not services under the Homemakers Program can be provided.
